ITALY has sensationally snubbed an audacious “backdoor” plot to sneak them into the 2026 World Cup at the expense of Iran.

A senior envoy to Donald Trump sparked international fury after suggesting the four-time champions should simply be “handed” a spot in the tournament—despite failing to qualify on the pitch for a record third time in a row.

The proposal, which would have seen Iran booted out to make way for the Italian giants, was immediately branded “SHAMEFUL” by Italy’s own Economy Minister, Giancarlo Giorgetti.

The controversial plan was hatched by Paolo Zampolli, a US special envoy and close ally of Trump. Zampolli reportedly lobbied both the former President and FIFA boss Gianni Infantino to parachute Italy into the US-hosted tournament.

Zampolli, an Italian native, argued that the Azzurri’s “pedigree” and four world titles justified a special inclusion. The move was widely seen as a diplomatic olive branch aimed at repairing the fractured relationship between Trump and Italian PM Giorgia Meloni.

But the Italians aren’t buying it. Minister Giorgetti led a chorus of disapproval from Rome, making it clear that Italy has too much pride to accept a “charity” spot.

Sports Minister Andrea Abodi also moved quickly to kill the story, insisting that footballing integrity must come first.
”Firstly it is not possible, secondly it is not appropriate,” Abodi declared. “You qualify on the pitch.”

The rejection is a bitter pill for Italian fans, but a principled one. The national team’s absence from the 2026 tournament marks a dark era for the football-mad nation, following their shock failures to reach the 2018 and 2022 editions.

A Hat-Trick of Horror
Italy’s World Cup woes have become the stuff of nightmares for the Mediterranean nation.
2018: A dismal playoff defeat to Sweden saw them miss their first World Cup in 60 years.
2022: Despite winning the Euros just a year earlier, they were stunned by minnows North Macedonia.

2026: A disastrous qualifying campaign and playoff exit confirmed a historic third straight miss.

FIFA has since confirmed there is “no Plan B,” and Iran remains fully scheduled to compete in Los Angeles and Seattle this summer.

For the Azzurri, the message is clear: if you want to play with the big boys, you have to win the games—not the politics.
