October 12, 2014 – The international Community today pledge a whopping sum of $5.4 billion to rebuild Gaza which was devastated following several months of bombardment from air land and sea by Israel.

The donation was announced at an international conference in Cairo, Egypt. The pledge is about one billion Dollars more than what authorities in Gaza had proposed for the rebuilding exercise, while Quarter pleaded about $1 billion more in aid.
About 2, 100 Palestinians and about 73 Israeli were killed during the onslaught.

About 18,000 homes were brought down by Israeli bombardment. Part of the money will be spent on reconstruction while the remaining will be spent on humanitarian aid.

Speaking in Cairo, Norwegian Foreign Minister, Boerge Brende said the money exceeded the $4bn (£2.5bn) the Palestinian Authority had asked for adding that half of the $5.4bn promised would be dedicated to reconstruction, and the assistance would be distributed in response to the daily needs of Palestinians.

“This is a major breakthrough, a very important signal of solidarity to the Palestinian people in general and not at least to the people that are suffering so badly in Gaza,” he said.

The US pledged $212m (£132m) in new aid, while the United Arab Emirates and Turkey both committed $200m (£124m).
