ABUJA, Nigeria – The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC has written to the Inspector General of Police, Usman Akali Baba over the declaration of the candidate of the All Progressive Congress, APC, Senator Aishatu Dahiru Binani as Governor-elect of Adamawa State.
Recall that the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Adamawa State, Barr. Hudu Yunusa Ari on Saturday declared Binani as governor elect while collation of results was ongoing, a development that led to chao and assault on the REC.
INEC consequently withdrew the powers of the REC, asked him to stay away from the election and annulled the declaration even after Binani had read his acceptance speech on the NTA and summoned the REC and Returning Officer to Abuja for a closed door meeting.
Shortly after the meeting today, INEC resolved to write to the Inspector-General of Police for the immediate investigation and possibly prosecute the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Adamawa State, Barr. Hudu Yunusa Ari.
INEC also requested the Secretary to the Government of the Federation to draw the attention of the appointing authority to the unwholesome behaviour of the REC for further action.
INEC also decided that collation process shall resume at a time to be determined by the Returning Officer.
Meanwhile, Senator Aishatu Dahiru Binani had gone to court seeking relief to restrain INEC from continuing with the collation process after her declaration as Governor-elect of Adamawa State.
