OSOGBO, Osun, Nigeria – The Independent National Electoral Commission(INEC) on Thursday declared candidate of the All Progressive Congress(APC), Mr. Gboyega Oyetola winner of the Ogun Governorship re-run election. He defeated Senator Ademola Adeleke in all the units where the election took place.
Senator Ademola Adeleke of the PDP won outrightly during the September 22 governorship election by a margin of over 300 votes. INEC Returning Officer, Professor Joseph Ademola Fuwape declared the election inconclusive, leading to the rerun. But the rerun was an election that was characterised by intrigues, invasion of thugs and harrassment of election observers and journalists by policemen and DSS officials deployed to the election. Former President Chief Olusegun Obasanjo declared the election a disgrace and an embarrassment to democracy.
Chief OIusegun Obasanjo @Chief_Obasanjo : “#OsunReRun was a disgrace and an embarrassment to the democracy we all fought hard for. If this is how Nigeria was ruled, this country would have ceased to exist. I am afraid what would be of our country if we allow their change for another 4years”, he said.
The PDP said APC agents in collaboration with @Policemen were seen harassing and beating up any known PDP members in
Osogbo LGA, Ward 5, Unit 17, Alekuwodo, Osogbo.
However, the Returning Officer in Osun State governorship election, Prof Joseph Fuwape has called on the PDP to seek redress in court, just as 16 members of PDP members were arrested during the rerun. According to SP Folasade Odoro, Police Public Relations Officer, Department of Operations, Force Headquarters, Abuja police team on stop-and-search duties at Orolu, intercepted vehicles with 16 persons on board in possession of customised INEC tags, face cap and jackets with the inscription of ‘INEC Osun 2018 Election Observer’ and PDP membership cards.
She said the suspects are using the items to have easy access to restricted areas meant for personnel with due accreditation.
“The Nigeria Police Force wishes to debunk report that some accredited INEC observers were arrested or denied access to polling units. Therefore, assuring the good people of Osun State and other critical stakeholders of its renewed commitment and resolve to ensure adequate security for a free and fair re-run election while investigation continues”, the police said.
