UTURU, Abia, Nigeria – Governor of Abia State, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu has praised the Chancellor of Gregory University, Uturu, Abia State, Prof. Gregory Ibe for his massive investment in education and human capital development.
Speaking while delivering the Gregory University Uturu third convocation lecture with the title ‘Pathways to the Development of Africa ‘, which took place recently at the Goodluck Jonathan auditorium of the University, the governor stated that “investment in education is critical to human capital development, both in Abia State and the country at large.
Prof. Ibe‘s huge investment in education in his Uturu home town is commendable, I therefore challenge other privileged and better endowed Abians to emulate this good gesture by investing in their local communities”, he said.
The Governor who is Visitor to the University promised to facilitate the connection of the institution to the national grid, in order to solve the power problem of the university. On the perennial water need of the institution, the Governor announced his plan to work with the university management in providing potable water to the university community.
He pledged the readiness of his administration to undertake the construction of access roads to the university. Earlier in his welcome speech, the Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Augustine Uwakwe appealed to the governor to link GUU and its host community to the 33KVA powerline at ABSU and also to provide good access road to the institution.
He further requested the governor to intervene on the water problem that has bedeviled the university, which has continued to make her depend solely on tanker water.
”We pray that your administration will put us into consideration via its Ministry of Water Resources by assisting us with some funds for water reticulation from point of borehole, while the Ministry of Land assist us with the right of land usage for boreholes and reticulation ‘he appealed.
In his own speech, the Chancellor of GUU Prof. Gregory Ibe told the governor that the institution is located in a remote area, stressing that the management is doing everything possible to provide the best education to Nigerians while striving hard to be ranked the best university in the country in particular and in Africa at large.
“We have the best Engineering College in Nigeria. We produce decking plates for industries and we are adequately equipped to provide the decking plates needs of Nigerians. We are also the first to start medical simulation in this country. It might interest you to know that for us to graduate any student, he or she must acquire one skill or the other. This is an entrepreneurial university “he said.
