“If we have opportunity to put him (Fashola) in office for the third time, I will lead the campaign”, he said.
Tinubu spoke at the 11th Executive Legislative Parley anchored on the subject, ‘Public Sector Re-engineering: The Continuing Story of Lagos’. Tinubu who was represented by Cardinal James Omolaja better known as Baba Eto, made the remarks in reaction to the opening remarks of the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Adeyemi Ikuforiji who referred to the governor as governor of governors, adding that he led the way for national development and transformation.
He said that Nigerians should be able to recognize good leadership when they see one and that incompetent leadership at the centre is responsible for insecurity in the system.
He said that Fashola came to office with glossy black hair, which he said had gone white due to hard work.
In his address at the occasion, Fashola alluded to the remarks, stressing that the Nigerian Constitution should be left the way it is allowing people to renew their tenure for another four years or be replaced.
“If he mentioned that my hair has gone from black to white, in third time, I will lose my hair”, he said jokingly , while attributing his success to team work. The governor said approach to governance must be business-like to deliver prosperity to the people as dividend just as those in private sector would deliver profit as reward to the people.
While alluding to the state of insecurity in Nigeria, the governor said the most urgent and compelling need in Nigeria is law and order since they remain the basis for good governance and foundation for development.
The governor said Nigerians must find the courage now to do something different and put in place a collaborative effort for policing. He said the constitution does not forbid multi-level policing, arguing that legislators who are serious-minded must create a law to allow for multi-level policing.
Fashola also questioned relevance of some of the laws that were passed when the executive ruled by means of decrees which have now become Acts of Parliaments. According to him, one of such laws is the law regulating maritime operations in Nigeria.
He explained that the law which gives the Federal Government leeway to regulate all operations in the maritime sector though on concurrent list needs to be amended. He said Federal Government agencies are beginning to demand for permits from state governments to build jetties which he said is akin to asking for permits to build bus stops.
If not amended, he said the law will hinder efforts by states in the coastal area to engage in meaningful maritime business.
