July 9, 2014 – Prominent Human Right Lawyer, Mr. Aturu Bamidele is dead. He was 49. According to Sahara Reporters, the lawyer died after a brief ailment.

The late lawyer was one of the founding members Democratic Alternative, a political group committed to pursuing deep-rooted democratic principles and holding those in power accountable to the governed.

He remains the only human right lawyer today in Nigeria that is in the league of the late Human Rights Activist, Chief Gani Fawehinmi. He was apolitical and defended journalists freely without charge.

He came to prominence as a member of the National Youth Service Corps(NYSC), when he refused to shake the hand of a military administrator of Niger State, Col. Lawan Gwadabe in 1988 during his NYSC passing out parade. He felt that the Nigerian military had caused great harm to the democratic aspirations of Nigerians.

Mr. Aturu studied law at the University of Ife, and devoted much of his legal practice to representing marginalized or oppressed individuals and groups.

He turned down his nomination to the ongoing National Conference in Abuja. His two phone numbers have so far been switched off.
