EGYPT – A senior Hamas political official, Mohammed Nazzal, warned Israel on Wednesday that any expansion of military operations beyond a “yellow line” would constitute a cancellation of the Sharm El Sheikh agreement and would be met with a decisive response from Palestinian factions.
Speaking to the Lebanese television channel Al-Mayadeen, Mr. Nazzal leveled strong accusations against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, claiming he and the “ruling gang in the Zionist entity are trying to evade the Sharm El Sheikh agreement.” While the exact terms of the agreement Mr. Nazzal refers to were not specified, Hamas perceives the current Israeli policy as a deliberate attempt to violate any understanding reached.
Mr. Nazzal stated unequivocally that if the “occupation expands its operations and crosses the yellow line, it will have canceled the agreement on its part.” He stressed that such a move would necessitate a strong stance from the Palestinian factions, adding that their response options are “open, responsibly.”
The Hamas official asserted the group’s leverage, which he said includes the retention of bodies, the fact that its weapons remain in its hands, and the justice of its cause.
Rejection of Oversight and Vision for Gaza
Mr. Nazzal also firmly rejected any idea of international oversight, stating, “The Hamas Movement cannot accept the idea of a High Commissioner; we cannot reintroduce colonialism.” This appears to be a pre-emptive strike against potential proposals for post-conflict governance or monitoring within the Gaza Strip.
In contrast, Mr. Nazzal presented Hamas’s own proposed structure for the leadership of Gaza: “the formation of an independent committee of technocrats,” a vision he claimed was approved by eight Palestinian factions that recently met in Cairo.
Blame on U.S.
In a pointed critique of Washington, Mr. Nazzal accused Mr. Netanyahu of being “deliberately and premeditatedly willing to violate the agreement,” adding that the Israeli leader receives his “cover… from the American administration.”
”We should not deceive ourselves into thinking that we are facing a neutral and just administration that is biased against injustice,” he concluded, reinforcing the movement’s long-held suspicion of American policy in the region.
