PORT-AU-PRINCE – President of Haiti, Mr. Ariel Henry has resigned from power. His resignation came following calls by armed gangs for him to step down to avoid civil war which could lead to genocide.
Henry, who spoke in exile said his government will step down for a transitional council but his pronouncement is yet to make any positive impact on the circle of violence in Haiti.
Ariel Henry came to power in July 2021 when President Jovenel Moise was gunned down inside his home near Port-au-Prince.
But his less than three year rule had led to hardship and violence which came to ahead when armed gangs led by former police officer Jimmy Cherizier better known as Barbecue invaded prisons and set free hardened criminals.
The deteriorating security, particularly in the metropolitan area of Port-au-Prince, characterized by increasingly violent criminal acts perpetrated by armed gangs, forced the President to impose curfew.
“Taking into account the attacks perpetrated on the night of March 2, 2024 by armed gangs against the two largest penitentiary centers in the country, namely in the Capital and at Croix des Bouquets, causing deaths and injuries in the ranks of the Police and prison staff, the escape of dangerous prisoners and the vandalization of these places;
“Considering that these actions are contrary to the laws, constitute acts of disobedience to law enforcement and endanger national security;
“The Government of the Republic, referring to the decree of March 3, 2024 declaring a state of emergency throughout the western department for a renewable period of seventy-two hours, and in order to restore the order and to take appropriate measures in order to regain control of the situation, decrees a curfew throughout this territory between six in the evening and five in the morning on Monday 4, Tuesday 5, Wednesday 6 and this Sunday, March 3 2024 from eight in the evening to five in the morning.
“This measure does not apply to law enforcement officers on duty, firefighters, ambulance drivers, health personnel and duly identified journalists. Consequently, the police were ordered to use all legal means at their disposal to enforce the curfew and apprehend all offenders”, Prime Minister of Haiti Patrick Michel Boivert said.
Ariel Henry had traveled to Kenya for a deal that will assist hm to put the violence under control.
