December 23, 2014 – Democracy Watch Group (DWG), a coalition of civil society organizations has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to test-run the Permanent Voter Card(PVC) in the six geo-political zones before they will be deployed for the general election in 2015.

In a statement signed by Barrister Wale Oguntade and Nelson Ekujimi, Chairman and Secretary respectively, the group also demanded that INEC should immediately recommence the distribution of PVC at polling units and local governments nationwide so that all registered voters get their PVC’s in order to be able to exercise their franchise.

The group is also advocating that all newly registered voters get their PVC’s before January 31st 2015 and that the Continuous Voters Registration (CVR) exercise should commence for a specific period in publicly communicated designated points in the local governments so that persons who have come into the 18 year old bracket and above and persons not previously registered or who were unable to register as a result of the short time allotted to the last exercise are able to do so.

The group noted that all the personnel to be deployed for the extended period of PVC distribution and Continuous Voters Registration (CVR) exercise should be properly trained and that if INEC is unable to meet its statutory mandate as a result of shortage of funds, due to unfolding developments, Democracy Watch Group (DWG) will mobilize ad hoc and voluntary staff to assist INEC to prosecute this national assignment or in the alternative support the electoral body through the mobilization of its civil society partners to advocate an extra budgetary allocation for a proper prosecution of the 2015 general elections by the National Assembly.
