YAMOUSSOUKRO – Nigeria’s Golden Eaglets kicked off their WAFU-B U17 Championship campaign in dominant fashion, overpowering the Baby Cheetahs of Benin Republic with a resounding 4-1 victory on Wednesday.
The win was powered by a hat-trick from forward George Agha and a stunning free-kick from David Edeh.
The Eaglets wasted no time asserting their authority. Just three minutes into the match, Boluwatife Thompson was fouled in the box, and George Agha calmly converted the resulting penalty to put Nigeria ahead.
Two minutes later, the Eaglets doubled their lead in spectacular fashion. David Edeh showcased his skill with a perfectly placed free-kick that sailed past the Benin goalkeeper, Warris Soumanou.
With a two-goal cushion, the team coached by Manu Garba was in complete control. Agha continued his prolific performance, netting his second goal in the 14th minute to extend Nigeria’s lead to 3-0.
Agha completed his hat-trick in the 32nd minute, capitalizing on a moment of hesitation from the Benin goalkeeper.
The goal was the culmination of a brilliant exchange of passes and dribbles between Thompson and Edeh, who set up Agha for his third.
Benin Republic managed to pull one back just before halftime. Jeremy Zannou scored a consolation goal with a low drive in the 45th minute, but it was not enough to spark a comeback.
The dominant display puts the five-time world champions in a strong position as they vie for the championship title.
