BERLIN – Germany women’s team coach Martina Voss-Tecklenburg named on Saturday the 23-player squad who will compete at the World Cup in New Zealand and Australia on July 20-August 20.

Germany will travel without Bayern Munich player Carolin Simon, who tore her cruciate ligament on Friday in the 3-2 defeat to Zambia, the last tune-up game before the tournament.

“The news about Carolin Simon hits us all. She had an excellent development, showed great performances and more than earned her place at the World Cup. We now have to accept the situation,” Voss-Tecklenburg said.

Captain Alexandra Popp will lead the team, while VfL Wolfsburg players Marina Hegering and Lena Oberdorf made it to the list despite also picking up injuries against Zambia.

Champions League runners-up Wolfsburg have the largest contingent with 10 players, while five come from Eintracht Frankfurt and four from German champions Bayern.

Germany leave for the tournament on Tuesday and play their first game on July 24 against Morocco. Their other group stage opponents are Colombia and South Korea.
