BERLIN – The German rescue ship Louise Michel saved more than 30 migrants at sea in the central Mediterranean on Wednesday. The organization of the same name posted the news on Twitter, saying it had taken them on board from a wooden boat.

The ship has been involved in other missions in recent days together with the Humanity 1 belonging to another German organization, SOS Humanity. More than 250 migrants were on board the Humanity 1 after Tuesday’s rescues.

The aid organization Médecins Sans Frontières is also currently operating in the Mediterranean and has so far rescued 254 people, according to its own figures. The privately funded NGOs are rescuing migrants in distress in the Mediterranean who want to reach the EU.

The refugees often set off from Libya or Tunisia. The boats they are on are usually overcrowded and unseaworthy, making the crossing very dangerous.

Italy, which recently tightened its migration policy under the new right-wing government of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, criticizes the rescue operations.

This year nearly 95,000 migrants reached the country by boat, according to official figures. In the same period in 2021, there were about 63,000.
