BERLIN – A specialist German police unit has arrested a man sentenced to life in prison for a Mafia murder in Italy in 2003, police in the northern state of Schleswig-Holstein announced on Tuesday.

The man, who was working under a false name as a fitness trainer in a hotel on the North Sea holiday island of Sylt, was arrested on Monday and is being held in custody pending extradition proceedings.

Italian police have confirmed the arrest. The man, who is 44, comes from the town of Scorzè near Venice, where he worked as a butcher in a supermarket, according to Italian media reports.

He was first arrested in 2012 before being convicted. He was ordered to wear an electronic bracelet before starting his sentence but managed to flee.
