ONITSHA, Anambra, Nigeria – A group known as Igbo Elders Council has condemned the seemingly jettisoning of rotational arrangement of major political parties in choosing their flag bearers.
The group made the condemnation in a statement jointly signed by the former justice of supreme Court of Nigeria, Hon. Justice Anthony Iguh (chairman) and Prof. Donald Okoli (National Secretary) ,that was made available to journalists in Awka, Anambra State on Sunday .
The Igbo elders council said that it is disheartening to note that when it is the turn of the south East to produce the president of the country, various political parties are jettisoning the political arrangement.
The group stated that it is the turn of the Igbo to produce the next president , and warned any Igbo presidential aspirant not to accept the position of Vice President.
According to the group , Igbo have contributed immensely to development of the country in various sector and should be considered to produce the president of the country.
The group said the Igboman has been denied the opportunity of becoming president since the end of the civil war in 1970 and it is time to correct the anomaly.
“We call on the major political parties in the country to field their presidential candidates from Igbo extraction in the forthcoming 2023 presidential election on the basis of equity ,justice and fairness.
“Thereupon, the National Executive Council NEC emphasised the need for urgent meeting of all inclusive Igbo Elders statesmen, critical /major stakeholders and national advisory council to bridge the cultural ,religious and economic gaps in leadership and governance in ‘Alaigbo’ and deliberate on the current security challenges bedeviling the region and other parts of country and proffer solutions on how best to solve the problems by way of revamping sustainable economic development on or before the end of july 2022”
“Also we called on all people from Igbo descent to unite for the purpose if achieving the presidency in 2023 and no politician from the zone should accept Vice presidential position “the group said.
