GAZA, Palestine – A Palestinian journalist was brutally gunned down while filming a report on families returning to their bombed-out homes in southern Gaza, it was dramatically announced last night.
Saleh Al-Jafarawi, a media activist, was reportedly shot dead by armed men allegedly loyal to the “israeli” occupation forces while carrying out his duties on Street 8 in southern Gaza City.
The Palestinian Journalists Protection Center (PJPC) condemned the killing as a “heinous crime” and a “direct assault on truth and press freedom” in a furious statement released Sunday evening.
Al-Jafarawi was on a field assignment, heartbreakingly documenting the suffering of local families as they tried to move back into their shattered, destroyed homes.
Gunned Down
But his vital mission was allegedly cut short when gunmen suddenly opened fire directly at him.
He was left seriously injured on the ground before tragically succumbing to his wounds.
The PJPC pointed the finger directly at the “israeli” occupation, holding them “fully responsible” for the shocking crime.
They also issued a dire warning about the rising menace of “armed groups loyal to it,” who they claim are deliberately trying to terrify journalists into silence and prevent them from showing the world the full truth of the conflict.
The group is now pleading for urgent action from the international community.
They demanded an international investigation into Al-Jafarawi’s death and called on the UN and human rights bodies to provide “real international protection” for Palestinian journalists who brave the immense risks to report the news.
His death adds to a chilling list of what the PJPC calls “systematic violations” aimed at reporters covering the conflict on the ground.
