GAZA, Palestine – The Foreign Press Association, FPA has condemned Israel for killing four Aljazeera journalists and two others in Gaza City.
In a statement, President FPA, Ian Williams condemned the killing of Al Jazeera journalist Anas al-Sharif and five of his colleagues.
“It is even more appalling given that the Israeli government’s acknowledges that it was a targeted assassination.
“The media team was working in a tent outside al Shifa Hospital in Gaza City at the time, fearlessly reporting on the suffering of the Palestinian people and bearing witness to now well-documented war crimes committed by Israeli forces”, he said adding that the killing comes as Israel blocks international media from Gaza and prepares to drive nearly a million people from Gaza City at gunpoint.
He said with no credible evidence, Israel has accused al-Sharif of working for Hamas.
“The Committee to Protect Journalists has documented and condemned Israel’s longstanding practice of accusing journalists of being terrorists without providing credible evidence”, he said adding FPA reminds Israel, and all governments aiding them, that journalism is not a crime – but under international law targeting journalists in a war zone certainly is.
He said that moments before the drone attack that led to his death, al-Sharif, 28, posted on X about Israel’s “intense, concentrated bombardment” on eastern and southern Gaza City.
” In a pre-recorded statement released after his death, Sharif said, “I never hesitated to convey the truth as it is, without distortion or misrepresentation, hoping that God would witness those who remained silent.”
Others killed in the attack include Al Jazeera correspondent Mohammed Qreiqeh and camera operators Ibrahim Zaher, Moamen Aliwa and Mohammed Noufal. A sixth journalist, Mohammad al-Khaldi, a local freelance reporter, was also reported killed in the air attack.
He noted, “the FPA mourns the loss of our media colleagues. We will not forget them, or their sacrifice”, he said.
