July 21, 2014 – Former Secretary General of Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) Dr. Rilwanu Lukman is dead.
He was 76.

Born on August 26, 1938, he died on Sunday morning in Vienna, Austria after a brief ailment. Already family sources have confirmed that he died in Austria where is resident.

“Yes, it’s true that Dr. Lukman passed on last night in a hospital in Vienna,” the source told Premium Times. His burial arrangement is yet to be released.
However, the source at OPEC said Mr. Lukman remains would have to undergo a formal documentation by the hospital in line with the Austrian law before being released and brought back to Nigeria.

Lukman trained as a mining engineer at the College of Arts, Science, and Technology, Zaria (now Ahmadu Bello University), and later Imperial College, London.
Lukman was appointed Minister of Mines, Power and Steel from 1984 to 1985 in the government of General Muhammadu Buhari.

In 1986 he was appointed Federal Minister of Petroleum Resources, holding that position until February 1990. In that role, he was also Chairman of the Board of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC).

He was briefly Minister of Foreign Affairs between January and September 1990. He was Chairman of the Board of Directors of the National Electric Power Authority (1993–1994).
