BERLIN – Footballer Etienne Portmann had an unusual Saturday as he was substituted in Schott Mainz’ first round German Cup game after an hour to make it to a wedding in time for best man duties.
There was no way he could have missed the wedding because he was best man for his closest friend, and the bride the twin sister of his own partner.
Sky TV said that that Mainz coach Samuel Horozovic had agreed to the unusual request by Portmann to play only part of the match.
Portmann played for an hour in fifth division Mainz’ 2-0 defeat against second tier Greuther Fürth.
He quickly changed and was taken to the wedding by a helicopter waiting next to the stadium, according to the local Merkurist portal and the Bild paper.
