The Iyaloja-General of Nigeria, Mrs. Folasade Tinubu-Ojo has explained her role in the crisis that led to the closure of Iponri Market and the alleged operation Show Your APC ID card before traders could be granted access to the market.

Tinubu-Ojo who addressed reporters along with market leaders in Lagos said she did not at anytime demand the sum of N5million from leaders of the market as condition to reopen the market, neither did she close the market to compel traders to register for the All Progressive Congress (APC) registration exercise.

She noted that traders in Iponri are educated people who cannot be pushed around, adding that APC registration is voluntary.

She explained that there has been issues relating to sanitation as well as attitude of some traders who are even interested in sleeping in the market. She said the market is governed by rules and that closure of the market remains the only way to compel traders who violate rules to comply.

She told journalists that she was not interested in reacting to the issue until the name of her dad, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu was dragged into the issue for political reasons. The Iyaloja General who was not happy with the report as a paid job.

She said the normal rules guiding operations of market in Lagos is for market leaders to resolve issues amicably within themselves and refer those beyond their capacity to the Iyaloja General for mediation.

Also Speaking, Secretary of Iponri Market, Mrs. Sikirat Adeyinka Koiki corroborated Tinubu-Ojo’s account adding that she was not aware if any money was paid by any group before the market was reopened since she was not with those affected, stressing that market executives decided to stand aside from the issue when those involved sought redress in ways outside regulations.

She explained that the Iyaloja General intervened to reduce monthly rent in the market to N1, 500 when Chairman of Surulere Local Government , Hon. Tajudeen Ajide raised rent from N500 to N10,000 monthly.
