October 08, 2015 – The Lagos State today alerted residents to prepare for flood that would result from intense rainfall in the month of October.
The state government also enjoined those that reside along flood plains, low line areas and other coast lines like Ajegunle,Owode-Onirin axis, Owode-Elelede,Kuramo beach, Alpha beach, Okun -mapo,Okun Ajah, Ijora-Badia, Iwaya among others to vacate their residence temporarily.
Permanent Secretary, Ministry for the Environment, Mr. Oluwatoyin Onisarotu said the warning became necessary in order to sensitize the populace to ensure free-flow of storm water in the drain.
He said the warning is imperative so as to avert consequences listed in the report of the Nigerian Metrological Agency (NIMET) which predicted heavy rainfall for Lagos State among others.
Onisarotu who pointed out that the rainy season is not over, appealed to Lagosians to clean and clear the drains in their frontage and environs regularly.
The permanent secretary advised residents not to panic, whenever it rains, as they would start to experience accumulated water concentration on some parts of the roads and highways, depending on the intensity of the rains.
He assured that the accumulated water will recede in no time, stressing that whatever flash floods recorded during the rains will gradually discharge in no time because of the effectiveness of the state drainage channels.
He implored Lagosians to be safety conscious during this period, adding that precautionary measures such as avoiding going out during the rains except only when it is compulsory must taken.
“Be conscious when driving; Do not over speed and ensure that your vehicles are in good condition; Do not drive through flooded areas as it might be difficult to identify its depth. Plan your journey before going out and avoid unnecessary outings,” he counseled.
He assured that the state government would continue to intensify its cleaning and maintenance programme , promising not to relent in their efforts until zero tolerance targets to flooding are attained.
