August 14, 2014 – The Federal Government has directed the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr. Suleiman Abba to dismantle all road blocks across the country mounted by people who are not official of internal revenue service, noting that the practice is illegal.

This was part of the resolution arrived at the National Economic Council (NEC) presided over by Vice President Namadi Sambo in Abuja.

While briefing reporters at the end of the council meeting, Governor of Anambra State, Dr. Willie Obiano said the practice runs contrary to section 2 of the relevant tax law.

He said the council will direct the Inspector General of Police to dismantle all road blocks mounted on high ways for revenue collection across the country.

The practice of using non officials of revenue agency for tax collection has been a source of concern for Nigerians leading to what experts have described as double taxation.

These crop of tax collectors are often found at point of entry in each of the states sometimes armed with planks perforated with nails often used to compel travelers to stop to for tax collection.
