August 25, 2014 – Federal Government has directed the Central Bank of Nigeria to avail farmers in the country the sum of N50 billion for mechanised farming in the country.

Vice President, Architect Namadi Sambo gave the directive at an occasion to inaugurate giant silos for storage of grains in Abuja, Lagos.

He said that government plans to set up silos across the country in readiness for mechanised agriculture which will eventually make Nigeria self-sustaining in terms of agriculture.

Speaking at the ceremony, Minister of Agriculture, Dr. Akinwunmi Adesina said mechanization of faming in the country will enhance food production adding that while a farmer can only plant on acre of land per day with crude implement, mechanization will enable the farmer to plant in at least five acres of land per day.

He explained that the money that will made available to farmers will enable them to lease tractors to produce more food for Nigerians.
