Human Rights Lawyer, Mohammed Fawehinmi at the weekend alleged that the Governor of Ekiti State, Dr. Kayode Feyemi is using public funds to build a university in Ghana, after increasing tuition to N130,000 for students admitted into the state university.

Fawehinmi who was speaking at a one day symposium on How Fee Hike and Commercialization Kill Public Education, LASU as a Case Study decried the development adding that he is still working underground to find out information about the university.

He explained that most of those who benefited from the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo’s free education policy have turned against the people adding that but for free education not many would have had the privilege of education. He challenged both the state and federal government to implement free education across board.

But in a swift reaction, Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Mr. Yinka Oyebode described the allegation as nothing but total falsehood, adding that it is a rumour peddled by the opposition and that it has been in circulation in the past three years.

He noted that besides ascertaining veracity of the story by searching the internet, such information can also be obtained from the ministry of education in Ghana. “Ghana is not far from here, you can find out such information from the ministry of education. If you say he is building university in Ghana, where is the location?”, he queried.

Oyebode said it is also not true that Fayemi increased school fees to N130,000. According to him, the governor met a fee of N150,000 in the state university when he assumed office and he magnanimously pegged it to N50,000. “The governor declared that no student will pay more than N50,000 as tuition”, he said adding that what the students are quoting as fees are nothing but mere administrative charges.

According to him, these charges are not part of the school fees paid in the university adding that Fayemi is still committed to the vow he made that no student will pay anything more than N50,000 as tuition.
