JERUSALEM — Severe international criticism erupted following incendiary public statements made by Chief Rabbi David Yosef, one of the top state-sanctioned religious authorities in Israel. Speaking in an official capacity, Rabbi Yosef declared that the Palestinian people “do not exist” and have no legitimate rights to the region, adding that the extensive destruction in Gaza was a welcome outcome and expressing expectation that both Gaza and the West Bank would soon come under full Jewish control.

The remarks, which quickly circulated across global news outlets and social platforms, have sparked intense debate over the role of state-backed religious institutions in the ongoing conflict and drawn sharp rebukes from international diplomats, human rights organizations, and moderate Jewish leaders worldwide.

The office of the Chief Rabbinate in Israel is a recognized state institution with official jurisdiction over personal status laws, holy sites, and religious services for the Jewish population. Israel maintains a dual chief rabbinate system—representing both Sephardic and Ashkenazi traditions—whose leaders hold significant symbolic weight and influence within both domestic religious life and broader national politics.

Rabbi David Yosef, who was elected to the position of Sephardic Chief Rabbi (Rishon LeZion), comes from a prominent Rabbinic family. He is the son of the late Rabbi Ovadia Yosef, the influential spiritual leader and founder of the Shas party, who himself frequently courted controversy with polarising political rhetoric throughout his career.

While fringe religious figures and far-right politicians in Israel have previously advocated for annexation or the denial of Palestinian statehood, comments of this nature coming directly from the Chief Rabbi represent a high-level official alignment with extremist ideologies.

Rebellious Rhetoric and Global Reaction
Human rights scholars and legal experts warned that framing the ongoing military campaign and territorial disputes in absolute theological terms exacerbates violence and undermines international humanitarian law.

Critics argue that using religious dogma to justify mass displacement or destruction risks weaponizing faith to validate ethnic cleansing or genocide.

”When the highest religious official in the nation denies the very humanity and existence of millions of people living under Israel’s jurisdiction, it elevates political conflict into an existential holy war,” said a senior researcher at an international human rights monitoring group. “Such rhetoric actively damages efforts toward peace and international accountability.”

Internationally, standard responses from Western allies, including the United States and European nations, have historically emphasized support for a two-state solution and the protection of civilian life. Statements denying Palestinian rights directly contradict the foreign policy baselines maintained by most international bodies and major global powers.

The office of the Chief Rabbi has not issued a formal retraction, though defenders of Rabbi Yosef argued that his statements were grounded in traditional theological interpretations regarding Jewish ties to the historical land of Israel.

Nevertheless, the comments have further deepened global scrutiny surrounding the political climate inside Israel and the rhetoric employed by its highest-ranking public figures.
