Nigeria, April 13, 2016 – Amnesty International (AI) has called on the Nigerian Army to investigate circumstances surrounding the massacre of 347 Shi’ites by the military.

Specifically AI is called on government to exhume all the 347 members of the group and send them for forensic examination and reveal the whereabouts of those responsible for the massacre.

“The bodies must be exhumed and Nigerian authorities should immediately reveal the whereabouts of those held in unacknowledged detention and either charge or release them,” Country Director of Amnesty International Nigeria, M.K. Ibrahim said, adding that anyone suspected of criminal responsibility for the mass murder must be brought to trial.

He added that it is now imperative that the mass grave sites should be protected in order that a full independent forensic investigation can begin.

“The horrific revelation that hundreds of Shi’ites were gunned down and dumped in mass graves is an important first step to bringing all those suspected of criminal responsibility for this atrocity to trial.
