BAYERN MUNICH – England defender Eric Dier hopes for sporting success with Bayern Munich after confirmation he will remain at the club next season.

Dier arrived in January from Tottenham Hotspur on loan for the rest of the season and for an estimated €4 million ($4.3 million) has now made a pre-agreed certain number of appearances for the Bundesliga champions which automatically triggered a renewal clause for 2024-25.

Bayern board member for sport Max Eberl confirmed the news before Bayern’s 2-2 draw at Freiburg, and the club followed up with a statement on Saturday.

“I’m happy in Munich. Now my future is sorted, and I can focus on playing well for the club and trying to help the club to win games, win competitions, even though it’s been a difficult period for us,” Dier said in the statement.

Eberl named 49-times capped Dier “a valuable support in our defence with all his character.”

Dier has played in seven games for Bayern, as a starter on five of those occasions.

His Spurs contract runs out on June 30 and Friday’s news means that his career there ended after more than nine years and 365 appearances.

Dier is Munich’s second arrival from Tottenham, following last summer’s €100 million signing of England captain Harry Kane who is the Bundesliga top scorer with 27 goals.

Bayern are facing a first season without silverware since 2012. They could fall 10 points behind Bundesliga leaders Bayer Leverkusen on Sunday, are out of the German Cup, and must overcome a 1-0 deficit against Italy’s Lazio to reach the Champions League quarter-finals.
