ENUGU — The Senatorial Candidate of the New Democrats Congress (NDC), Princess Ada Ogbu, has strongly condemned the violent attack on members of her party during a ward meeting in Obuoffia, Nkanu West Local Government Area of Enugu State.

The attack, which occurred on Saturday, left nine party faithful critically injured. The victims are currently receiving emergency medical treatment in various hospitals across the state capital.

Reacting to the incident in a statement made available to Vanguard, Princess Ogbu described the bloody assault as a deeply disturbing trend that must not be tolerated as standard political behavior.

”I strongly condemn the attack on NDC party faithful in Obuoffia, Nkanu West LGA, during a ward meeting yesterday,” Ogbuku stated. “Nine members of the party are still critically injured and receiving treatment in hospitals across Enugu. This is deeply disturbing and must not be allowed to pass as normal political behaviour.”

Directing her call to the state leadership, the senatorial hopeful appealed directly to the Executive Governor of Enugu State, Dr. Peter Mbah, demanding swift official action to guarantee the safety of political actors regardless of party affiliation.

”Governor Peter Mbah, as Chief Security Officer of the state, must ensure that citizens are free to attend political meetings, support candidates of their choice, and express their political views without intimidation or violence,” she added.

Expressing concern over the recurrence of political hostility in the state, Princess Ogbuku recalled previous violent episodes in Enugu’s political landscape, warning against the normalization of voter intimidation and bloodshed.

”We have seen the consequences of this before. During the last election cycle, a candidate was murdered only days before the election.

Enugu cannot afford to become a place where political violence is gradually accepted as part of the process. What happened in Obuoffia must be properly investigated, and those responsible must be held accountable. Politics must remain a contest of ideas and choices, not fear and bloodshed,” she insisted.

Enugu State, historically considered one of the relatively stable political environments in Nigeria’s South-East geopolitical zone, has witnessed heightened political tensions during recent electoral cycles.

Security concerns escalated significantly in February 2023 following the tragic assassination of Barrister Oyibo Chukwu, the Labour Party (LP) senatorial candidate for Enugu East, who was ambushed and killed alongside his driver just days before the general elections.

The latest incident in Obuoffia, Nkanu West LGA—a key political stronghold in the Enugu East Senatorial District—raises fresh apprehensions among opposition parties and civil society groups regarding political tolerance, free association, and voter safety ahead of upcoming political activities in the state.

As at the time of filing this report, the Enugu State Police Command is yet to issue an official statement regarding arrests or the preliminary findings of their investigation into the Obuoffia attack.
