Ebola: Nigerians Preach, Embrace Hot Salt Water Bath as Remedy

August 8, 2014 – Nigerians from all walks of lives are now embracing hot salt water bath as a probable remedy to the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) which has killed over 932 in four West African countries of Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Guinea and Liberia.

So far two people have died in Lagos, Nigeria. They include index case involving Patrick Sawyer, the naturalized American resident in Liberia and a Nigerian Nurse. Two others are in critical condition out of the five whose blood samples have showed signs of Ebola virus.

So far the virus has no cure even as Nigeria government has dismissed suggestions by one of Nigeria’s distinguished medical practitioner, Professor Maurice Iwo who has identified bitter kola as possible remedy.

But Nigerian airwaves was abuzz with reports of salt remedy on Friday with many calling radio stations to ascertain veracity of the claim even as many have continued to take hot salt water bath as remedy.

So far the source of the halt salt water bath is not known. But a Lagos based Journalist, Florence Binitie (not her real names) said she actually took hot water bath after she was woken up from sweet sleep by her mother.

“She asked me to boil water, dab it with salt, pray over it and have a hot bath” she told our correspondent. She said the mother anchored her belief on the experience of an ancient prophet in the bible who was cured of serious ailment after immersing himself in salt water.

Another presenter in one of the radio station said she was practically ordered back into the bathroom to have hot salt water bath by her mother on Friday morning before leaving he house.
