September 13, 2014 – The World Health Organisation (WHO) has announced the readiness of the Cuban Government to send 165 Cuban health professionals to help West African Countries afflicted with Ebola Virus Disease(EVD) especially Sierra Leone.

They would arrive in October and would work in Sierra Leone for 6 months.
In the Cuban team are physicians, nurses, epidemiologists, specialists in infection control, intensive care specialist and social mobilization officers, Director General WHO, Dr. Margaret Chan has announced.

The team is however expected to concentrate in Sierra Leone where EVD has been responsible to hundreds of deaths.

“I am extremely grateful for the generosity of the Cuban government and these health professionals for doing their part to help us contain the worst Ebola outbreak ever known. This will make a significant difference in Sierra Leone,” Chan said, adding that Cuba is world famous for its ability to train outstanding doctors and nurses.

He thanked the Cuban government for opting to help other countries in need of medical help at this moment.

The WHO Ebola response roadmap, released on 28 August, highlights the need for a massively scaled response to support affected countries. The commitment from the Cuban government exemplifies the kind of international effort required to intensify response activities and strengthen national capacities, WHO said.
