IKEJA, Lagos, Nigeria – Senior Advocate of Nigeria(SAN), Dr.Joseph Nwobike was today found guilty of nine count charge of attempting to pervert cause of justice. He was convicted by Justice Raliat Adebiyi of an Ikeja High Court.
Dr. Nwobike had been charged to court by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission(EFCC) on 18 count charge of offering graft, making false statement to an officer of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission(EFCC) and attempting to pervert justice.
He was however found not guilty of offering graft and making false statement to an officer of the EFCC.
Counsel to the EFCC, Mr. Rotimi Oyedepo told the court that the offence under the EFCC Act carries a jail term of 2 years for each count, making 18 years for the 9 counts and urged the judge to allow the SAN to serve the full sentence to serve as a deterant to both SANS and young lawyers.
The judge has risen and will soon pass her final sentence. Nwobike will now be the first SAN to be convicted in Nigeria. Details later.
