Death Toll in Kunshan City Explosion Hits 71

August 3, 2014 – The death toll at the fire explosion that rocked Kunshan City, China on Saturday has risen to 71, officials have said. The Kunshan Manucipal Government said more than 264 workers were on site when the explosion occurred and that 187 people were injured.

According to state media, the factory is operated by Kunshan Zhongrong Metal Products Company,

CCTV said officials of the Kunshan government said at a press conference that the death toll has risen 71, with 187 injured and that three more bodies were found during the clean-up work while the injured are receiving treatment at 15 hospitals in Shanghai and Jiangsu Province.

Medical experts have been deployed to these hospitals. So far investigation into the causes of the blast has begun, with preliminary findings attributing cause of the explosion to negligence.

The incident occurred at around 7:30 on Saturday at a factory where wheels are made for car makers in the United States including General motors, Chinese media have said and that 45 people died on the spot.
