There was wild jubilation in Crimea and Russia on Sunday following reports in the Russian media that the people of Crimea have voted overwhelmingly to join Russia.

Russian News Agency, RIA reported that 93 percent of accredited voters in Crimea have voted in a referendum to join Russian despite blackmail from the West, with the United State, describing the overwhelming vote as illegal and threatening not to recognize the wish of the people of Crimea.

Russian media has reported that exit polls show the overwhelming majority of voters in Crimea supported union with Russia in the peninsula’s referendum. Interfax reported that voter turnout had exceeded 80 percent.

A report monitored on Aljazeera noted that “most people in Russia are delighted by the news”, with reports that Russian President Vladimir Putin is “enjoying his highest popular rating in three years, as it jumped ten percent in the last six weeks since the move on Crimea”.
