GABON – The military junta in Gabon, Central African Republic have toppled a democratically elected government in the country, citing fraudulent elections as the reason for the intervention.
The junta took over government from President Ali Bongo Ondimba shortly after he was announced by the electoral umpire as winner of the election for a third term in an election globally described as fraudulent.
The coup leaders announced the takeover on national television and it is the most recent of coups sweeping across the African continent as a result of seat tight posture of African leaders and deliberate lack of transparency in governance and the electoral process in a bit to perpetuate themselves in power.
The Gabon coup leaders say President Ali Bongo Ondimba is currently under house arrest, surrounded by family members as Presidential guards take over the Presidential palace.
Meanwhile, there is mixed reaction in Libreville, with many jubilating while some loyal to Ali Bongo have hit the streets with protests.
