German football is in disarray after the men’s team lost 4-1 at home to Japan in a friendly on Saturday, their fourth loss in five games ahead of hosting Euro 2024. The women meanwhile went out of the recent World Cup in the group stage and youth teams continue to flop.
A big youth football reform package, making certain age groups play in smaller teams and on smaller pitches, has been criticized by many – including Borussia Dortmund chief executive Hans-Joachim Watzke who wondered whether youngsters would soon be playing without a ball.
Now Keßler has opted against joining the DFB in a role above both the national teams and youth set-ups.
“I decided last week to withdraw from talks and would like to continue in my current role wholeheartedly,” the 35-year-old said in a statement on Sunday.
Keßler, the 2014 world player of the year, is currently head of women’s football at European governing body UEFA.
Men’s 2014 World Cup winner Sami Khedira had also been in the running for the DFB post, but negotiations with the 36-year-old collapsed.
