PALMA, Mallorca – The Balearic bliss of the Estadi Mallorca Son Moix was shattered last night as Osasuna launched a dramatic, last-gasp comeback to steal a point in a thrilling 2-2 LaLiga draw.
RCD Mallorca were cruising to victory in their sun-kissed, recently refurbished home, a venue usually synonymous with island tranquillity.
But the atmosphere turned from celebratory to sickly sweet-and-sour in the final moments as the visitors snatched a stunning equaliser in injury time.
Mallorca’s own Murigi had been the hero for over half an hour, scoring twice in the space of four minutes just past the hour mark.
The first came from the penalty spot in the 62nd minute, sending the crowd at the Son Moix into raptures.
He doubled his tally just four minutes later, putting the Islanders firmly in control on a beautiful Mediterranean evening.
For the home supporters, basking in the glow of their team’s dominance in the largest stadium in the Balearic Islands, the game looked won. The Estadi Mallorca Son Moix, an arena recently modernised to bring the fans closer to the action, seemed set to host a famous victory.
But Osasuna, true to their battling nature, refused to roll over. They first pegged back the hosts with a strike from Garcia in the 82nd minute, an effort that injected a sudden, nervous tension into the grandstands.
The real heartbreaker, however, came deep into stoppage time. As the clock ticked past the 90-minute mark, Osasuna’s Boyomo pounced, levelling the score at 2-2 and silencing the majority of the 23,000+ crowd at the Estadi Mallorca Son Moix.
The result leaves a sour taste for Mallorca, who saw a comfortable two-goal lead vanish at their island fortress.
Osasuna, on the other hand, will celebrate a vital point snatched from the jaws of defeat, making the long journey back to Pamplona a little easier.
