BERLIN – Cologne coach Steffen Baumgart said he doesn’t want to drag negotiation talks for a contract extension with the club.

“We’re not negotiating any more. If the club wants me to stay, we will make it for another year, I won’t say no,” he told the Express newspaper on Friday.

Baumgart considers the conditions in his current contract to be sufficient. “What’s in my contract now will be in the next one, exactly in the same way,” he said.

Baumgart moved to Cologne from Paderborn in the 2021-22 season and his current contract runs until June.

His first season at the club was the best for Cologne since the introduction of the current league format in 1963 and crowned with a spot in the Conference League. Nevertheless, a new deal would see an extension only until 2024.

That doesn’t bother the coach, who believes long-term agreement have little meaning in football’s fast-paced environment.

“If everyone agrees the work is good, we will simply extend (the contract). I have no intention of leaving,” Baumgart stressed.
