ONITSHA, Anambra, Nigeria – Civil Society Organisation, Recover Nigeria Project  (RNP) will on Monday, 17th August, 2020  commence a two week hunger strike to compel the Anambra state governor ,Mr Willie Obiano to conduct local government elections in the state.

Coordinator of  Recover Nigeria Project, Mr Osita Obi  made the call  in a letter addressed to Governor  Obiano  and copied to State Commissioner of Police, Director , Department of State Security Services and National Human Rights Commission, Abuja and made available to newsmen   in Awka Anambra state capital on Thursday.

According to him, none conduct of local government elections in the state was criminal and denial of citizen’s political rights.

Obi said immediately after the hunger strike, the group shall mobilize the public for civil disobedience to occupy local government secretariats in Anambra state to  draw the attention of the world and federal government to issue.

He said the conduct of local government elections in the state was denying development and youths empowerment at the grassroots.

Obi said, if local government elections were conducted, those younger ones who wish to serve the country may start and grow to the national level and the same time it will create jobs at the grassroots.

Recall, that last  week, Arthur Eze, Nigerian Labour Congress NLC Anambra state chapter, People Democratic Party PDP and other civil societies  had urged the governor to conduct state local government elections.

The State Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment Mr. C.Don Adinuba said that the local government elections in the state were not being conducted because a group in the state took government to court over non conduct of elections and that the case is still  pending.

According to him, as a law abiding government, it cannot go ahead to conduct elections when there is a pending court action.
