MUNICH – German Culture Commissioner Claudia Roth was attacked with an unidentified liquid during an event that incorporates a beauty pageant at Landshut to the north-east of Munich, police reported on Monday.

Roth, a member of the Green party, was not injured in the incident, which occurred during a pageant in the city on Sunday afternoon while she was on the stand set aside for dignitaries.

The assailant disappeared into the crowd of spectators, the police report said. Roth left the event soon afterwards.

The event, also attended by Ilse Aigner, president of the Bavarian parliament, and Lutheran Bishop Heinrich Bedford-Strohm, marks the 1475 marriage of Polish Princess Hedwig to George the Rich, the last duke of Bavaria-Landshut.

The Landshut Wedding was included on UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage List in 2018. The event is celebrated with a pageant every four years.
