IKEJA, Lagos, Nigeria – A Sexual Offences Court sitting in Ikeja, Lagos today convicted Sunday Salami(34) and sentenced him to 50 years imprisonment for defiling a 14 year old student(names withheld).
In sentencing him, Justice Sybil Nwaka said the state government frowns at issues of sex defilement and that it remains a serious offence and called on all to join hands with the Lagos State Government to fight the scourge. She said that the preponderance of the incidents of defilement has put fear in every girl child, making them scared in their own world.
Nwaka who said the offence contravene relevant sections of the laws of Lagos State said that the Prosecution led by B.T Boye proved their case beyond resonable doubt having been able to present medical reports which corroborated account of the witness that the defendant cornered her on the way from school, pushed her into a chair in a nearby shots and inserted his pennis into the vault of her virgina.
She agreed with the prosecution who said that the essential element of child defilement is account of the victim and that the victim identified the assailant as the person who defiled her. The Judge did not agree with the defence team who said the assailant is incapable of having an erection and thus not able to defile the 14 year old girl.
She said that though the defence had in allocutos pleaded for leniency, the offence carries life sentence and that every child defiler must be put away from the society. Earlier, Worer Obuabaka had in his allocution described the defendant as a born again christian who has repented of his sin and now fast on daily basis, a development he said accounts for his present slim posture.
