September 12, 2014 – The National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB) clamped down on sellers of pornographic and unclassified movies in parts of Ikoyi, in Lagos state as part of effort to enforce classification of movies.

The raid which was carried out in collaboration with the men of the Nigeria Police attached to the Dolphin Divisional Police Station, took place in Obalende, Dolphin and Awolowo Road areas of the State.

The raid met with strong resistance by the film sellers, particularly in Obalende, resulting in the arrest of six of the film sellers by the Police. No fewer than two thousand copies of unclassified, mainly multiple in one films, both local and foreign and pornographic materials were confiscated by the staff of the Board, in collaboration with the Police.

Prominent among the unclassified films seized included; Season 5,Arab Money, Estate Runs , The Wrong Target, Ritual Men, Ibu Vs Okon, Educated Housemaids, Ashawo Umunede, Blood Tonic, Strippers in Love, After the Sex among others.

Speaking on the raid, the South West Zonal Head of Operations, of the Board, Mr. Chinedu Azi, said the raid was informed by the desire of the Board to rid the market of pornographic movies.
According to him, it is illegal for anyone to display pornographic movies since they violate the laws of the land. His words, “as long as the films did not pass through the Board for censorship and classification they violate the laws of the land”.

Azi reiterated that the Board had no option than to wield the big stick since these operators had ignored numerous demand notices issued them by the Board advising them to desist from selling pornographic films, uncensored movies and bring their films for censorship and classification by the Board. Beside, Azi declared, “it was also a statement of intent by the Board that it is no longer business as usual as every operator in the film business must register with the Board and comply with all the rules governing film business in Nigeria”.

He also noted that the raid is to assure those operators who have complied with regulatory requirements of the Board, that the Board is ready to provide enabling environment for them to operate and do business.
