By Our Man in Lyon

CELTA VIGO made history on French soil last night, dumping Europa League favorites Lyon out of the competition with a clinical 2-0 masterclass that left the Groupama Stadium in stunned silence.

Claudio Giraldez’s men didn’t just win; they dismantled the French giants, who finished the night with nine men and their European dreams in tatters. On a night where the stars had to align, it was Celta’s shining lights, Javi Rueda and Ferran Jutglà, who stole the show.

The tone was set just 19 minutes in when Lyon’s Moussa Niakhaté saw straight red for a clumsy challenge on Rueda. From that moment, the “League Phase Leaders” looked like a ship without a rudder. Despite the man advantage, Celta had to rely on the heroics of Lyon keeper Dominik Greif, who kept the scores level at the break with a string of world-class saves.

But even Greif couldn’t hold back the tide forever. In the 61st minute, the pressure finally told. Sergio Carreira—a constant menace on the flank—delivered a fizzing ball across the six-yard box. While the Lyon defense stood frozen, Javi Rueda showed the predatory instinct of a true star, bundling the ball home to give the visitors a deserved lead and a 2-1 aggregate cushion.

Lyon threw the kitchen sink forward late on, but with the teenage sensation Endrick kept under lock and key by Celta’s veteran general Marcos Alonso, the equalizer never looked likely.

In stoppage time, the knockout blow arrived. Substitute Ferran Jutglà—the man for the big occasion—found himself in acres of space. With the cool head of a seasoned assassin, he picked his spot and slotted the ball into the bottom corner to make it 2-0.

The frustration finally boiled over for Lyon in the dying seconds. Nicolás Tagliafico, already on a yellow, lost his head and earned a second booking for dissent, leaving the hosts to finish the game with just nine men on the pitch.

It was Celta’s first-ever victory in France, and on this evidence, they won’t fear anyone in the quarter-finals. For Lyon, a season that promised so much is now a domestic-only affair.
