ABUJA, Nigeria – Authorities in Cameroon have notified Nigeria of her intentions to open the Lagdo Dam, which resulted in massive flooding in Nigeria two years ago.

In a statement, Director General, National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, Ambassador Umar Z Salisu said his office is in receipt of the notification from authorities in Cameroon that it intends to open the Lagdo Dam on the Benue River in days ahead as a result of heavy rainfall around the dam catchment area in Northern Cameroon.

In the letter dated 21 August, 2023, Salisu said the authorities will only be releasing modulated variable small amount of water at a time in days ahead in order to avoid and mitigate damage the released water may cause on the River Benue basin in both Cameroon and Nigeria.

It directed the agency to take necessary precautionary measures to avoid damage and inform residents to take measures to mitigate the damage.
