ILORIN, Kwara – A Borno State entrepreneur has been tossed in the slammer for six months after being found guilty of possession of counterfeit currency and cybercrime.
Muhammed Bukar, a businessman from the Dikwa Local Government Area, was sentenced by Justice Abimbola Awogboro of the Federal High Court in Ilorin, Kwara State.
The court delivered the verdict after finding Bukar guilty on a two-count charge brought against him by the Ilorin Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is Nigeria’s specialist law enforcement agency tasked with investigating financial crimes such as advance fee fraud (also known as “419”), money laundering, and, as in this case, cybercrime and counterfeiting.
The conviction of Bukar highlights the Nigerian government’s ongoing struggle to curb the rise of both physical and digital financial crimes, which have been a persistent problem affecting businesses and international trade.
The sentence serves as a stern warning to others operating outside the law. Bukar now faces a stretch behind bars for his involvement in the schemes.
