Buhari appoints Justice Ibrahim Tanko Mohammed Acting Chief Justice of Nigeria

ABUJA, Nigeria – President Mohammadu Buhari has appointed Justice Ibrahim Tanko Mohammed as Acting Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN). He appointed him after suspending current CJN, Justice Walter Kanu Onnoghen.

Onnoghen has been in the news after it was discovered that he made false and irregular asset declaration at the Code of Conduct(CCT) and has he has been battling to save his job.

The current CJN is the next in the line in the rank.

Justice Ibrahim Tanko Mohammed was born on December 31, 1953 at Doguwa – Giade, a local government area in  of Bauchi. He attended Government Secondary School, Azare where he obtained the West Africa School Certificate in 1973.

He later proceeded to Ahmadu Bello University where he obtained a bachelor’s degree in Law in 1980. He also has a Masters Degree and a Doctorate (Ph. D) from the same university in 1984 and 1998 respectively. Justice Ibrahim Tanko Mohammed was called to the bar in 1981.

He was appointed Chief Magistrate In 1989. He later became a judge of the Federal High Court. a position he held till 1991 when he became a Judge at the Bauchi State Sharia Court of Appeal.

He served in that capacity for two years before he was appointed to the bench of the Nigerian Court of Appeal as Justice in 1993. He held this position for thirteen years before he was elevated to the bench of the Supreme Court of Nigeria.
