BERLIN – Germany’s firebrand opposition leader Alice Weidel has sparked a diplomatic firestorm by declaring that a lasting peace in Europe is “only possible” if the West makes a deal with Russia.

In a bombshell interview on AfD TV, the co-leader of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) slammed current European foreign policy as a “disastrous mistake” and called for an immediate U-turn on energy sanctions.

Weidel, whose party has seen a surge in popularity amid Germany’s economic stagnation, argued that Berlin must abandon its “values-based” isolation of the Kremlin.

”Peace in Europe is not possible against Russia, but only with Russia,” she told viewers. She further insisted that the German government must prioritize its own citizens’ pockets over international optics by reopening the door to Russian gas.

The AfD boss is demanding:
An immediate resumption of Russian energy imports to lower sky-high household bills.

A halt to the “economic war” which she claims is de-industrializing Germany.
Compensation from Ukraine for the destruction of the Nord Stream pipelines.

The AfD’s pro-Moscow stance comes at a time of extreme tension in Germany. While Chancellor Friedrich Merz has maintained a hard line against Vladimir Putin, the AfD has successfully tapped into “energy fatigue” among voters, particularly in the former East Germany.

Weidel’s latest comments follow a series of provocations, including her recent demand that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky pay for the “billions in damages” caused by the Nord Stream blasts.

Critics have branded Weidel a “Kremlin stooge,” but with the German economy struggling under the weight of the “Energiewende” (energy transition), her message of cheap Russian gas and “Germany first” is gaining dangerous traction.

”The country that did this to us cannot be our friend,” Weidel said, referring to the pipeline sabotage. “We must return to a policy of mutual respect and interest-driven trade.”
