A DERANGED anti-ULEZ fanatic who blew up a traffic camera with a home-made bomb—sending deadly shrapnel flying into a child’s bedroom—has been convicted of a terrifying terror-style plot.
Kevin Rees, 63, was found guilty today of causing an explosion likely to endanger life after his “miraculous” failure to kill or maim innocent Londoners in the name of his crusade against the clean-air scheme.
The Sidcup resident turned a suburban street into a war zone on December 6, 2023. Driven by a “complete disregard” for his neighbors, Rees planted a metal cylinder packed with explosive “black powder” at the base of a ULEZ camera in Shuttle Close.
The resulting blast was so powerful it:
Ripped through a passing car’s passenger seat.
Shattered a van and blew out tyres.
Destroyed a nearby porch, shed, and a child’s Wendy house.
Hurled metal shrapnel over 100 meters, smashing into a child’s bedroom window frame.
Superintendent James Derham fumed: “It was miraculous that nobody was killed or seriously injured.
He showed a complete disregard for the safety of people who live in the area—all because he was unhappy with ULEZ.”
CAUGHT ON CAMERA
Despite his attempt to play the “invisible bomber,” Rees was spotted fleeing the scene after lighting the fuse.
Counter-terrorism detectives tracked his Smart car back to his home in Harcourt Avenue, where they uncovered a “bomb-maker’s lair.”
Inside his loft, cops found:
Packages of aluminium powder and iron oxide;Chemicals used to create low-explosive mixtures ;Three home-made stun guns.
Rees’s ego proved to be his downfall. Detectives found he had been “cheerleading” the destruction of cameras on social media.
On the day of the blast, he even took “trophy photos” of the camera being installed, and later snapped pictures of the emergency services as they scrambled to deal with his handiwork. He tried to delete the evidence, but tech experts recovered the lot.
In a bizarre twist, the court heard that the camera Rees targeted had already been cut down by a different vandal earlier that day.
Rees simply blew up the remains of the pole.
Rees was convicted at Woolwich Crown Court of causing an explosion and three counts of possessing a prohibited weapon. He will be sentenced at a later date.
