November 5, 2014 – Premier League outfit, Abia Warriors Football Club of Umuahia has said it may not honour the end of season week 38 Glo Premier League encounter with Gombe United scheduled for this weekend in Gombe due to security worries in the state.

Speaking on the security situation in Gombe Secretary to the club, Mr. Oliver Ndife said the club is under pressure from parents of the players who do not want their wards to risk their lives.

According to the secretary, the club has already communicated its position to the LMC, organizers of the League but lamented that no response has been received towards this end.

Ndife said the management was further moved to take the stand after many parents, guardians and relations of their players and officials stormed the club’s secretariat in Umuahia requesting that their wards should not risk their lives travelling to Gombe just to honour a football match.

“The concern shown particularly by the players’ parents and guardians who, apart from storming our office, also have inundated us with calls, have aroused our curiosity since they have warned us not to take their wards to a volatile city like Gombe. We have to respect their opinion and if the LMC insists we play in Gombe, I’m afraid, we may not honour the game”, Mr. Ndife said.

The club’s secretary however expressed confidence that the LMC will respond positively to the appeal and shift the week 38 encounter to another venue to avoid any unforeseen circumstance.
