BERLIN – Bayer Leverkusen CEO Fernando Carro has apologized for his harsh statements about Bayern Munich board member for sport Max Eberl in view of the Bavarians’ interest in defender Jonathan Tah.
“I’m an emotional person. I made the statements about Max Eberl in an informal exchange with Leverkusen fans. I didn’t intend for them to spread in this form. But that doesn’t chance anything about the statement, for which I hereby apologize,” Carro told the Bild newspaper on Wednesday.
The Kicker magazine reported that Carro criticized Eberl during a meeting with fans at the BayArena on Tuesday evening.
“I don’t really care about Max Eberl, not at all. And I wouldn’t negotiate with him,” Carro reportedly said.
The background to his statement is the uncertainty surrounding Tah. The defender has a contract with Leverkusen until summer of 2025 and is still training at the club.
But Leverkusen and Bayern have reportedly already reached an agreement for the transfer.
Bayern, however, must first sell players. On Tuesday evening, they announced the sale of Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui to Manchester United.
