BERLIN – German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock has called for the empowerment and unity of girls worldwide on the occasion of the International Day of the Girl on Wednesday.

In a post on Instagram, Baerbock condemned the “terrible crimes of Hamas” and the use of girls and women in Gaza as “human shields.”

She went on to write that girls and women should be able to realize their dreams without restrictions from men, laws or religious dictates. “I wish that no one stops you in doing so.”

Along with her message, Baerbock posted a series of photos of pioneering women when they were children.

Among them were pictures of Pakistani activist Malala Yousafzai, former German chancellor Angela Merkel, Mexican artist Frida Kahlo and Nigerian writer Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.

The Day of the Girl was launched by the United Nations in 2011 to make the concerns of girls visible and to advocate for their opportunities and rights.
